At ATD Therapy, we understand that seeking therapy can be a big decision.
We want to ensure that you have all the information you need to make an informed decision about your mental health journey. That's why we've put together this FAQ page to answer some of the most common questions we receive from our clients. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us. We're here to support you every step of the way.
If you are curious about the therapeutic process and the ways you can be your best self, then yes! One stigma against therapy is that it is meant for people who “have problems.” At ATD Therapy, we believe that therapy is meant for anyone who has identified challenges in their life and who is looking to make productive changes for a better future. Sometimes just having a safe space, free from judgment, where you can talk about whatever is on your mind can be invaluable.
For couples therapy, sessions are 55 minutes.
In the first session, both partners meet with their therapist to explore and discuss their present concerns. The next two sessions will be individual sessions during which each partner will have the opportunity to provide personal historical context to their therapist. Things to be explored include childhood, family dynamics, friendships, and past relationships.
In the fourth session, the couple will come back together with their therapist and explore steps for moving forward. The therapist will review the couple’s relationship blueprint, and then the great work starts!
For individual therapy, sessions are 45 minutes.
During the first few sessions, you and your therapist will get to know one another. It will feel like you are talking a lot, but that is part of the process and will allow the work that follows to begin with a strong foundation.
To get the most out of your sessions, we recommend coming weekly. Weekly sessions help to establish the ideal combination of comfort, consistency, and momentum to maximize the benefits of the therapeutic work.
Therapy is a nonlinear process that can vary from person to person depending on their unique challenges or goals. Sessions could take place for a couple weeks, a few months, or longer. If a specific timeline is important to you, having specific goals in mind can help you collaborate with your therapist, but that is by no means necessary.
The benefits are virtually limitless!
Therapy can be a space to explore and heal old wounds from your past or to tackle present concerns that may be creating a barrier against moving forward into your future. Therapy helps individuals, couples, and families reveal and navigate underlying emotions that can help to understand subconscious motivations.
We understand that insurance can be an important consideration for clients when searching for a therapist. At ATD Therapy, we are considered an “out-of-network provider” like most private practices in New York City and New Jersey.
However, unlike many other private practices, we verify any out of network coverage you may have prior to your first session.
Additionally, we can provide you with weekly session receipts and monthly invoices that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.
Sessions are completely confidential with a few exceptions (when clients currently have suicidal or homicidal ideation; when clients reveal a situation of child or elder abuse).
With that being said, if one of the exceptions does arise during a session, you and your therapist will talk about next steps together.
We use a variety of modalities, but some of the most frequently employed include the following:
Gottman Method
Psychodynamic
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Internal Family Systems Model (IFS)
Relational Therapy
Mindfulness
Motivational Interviewing
